Established in 1992, the Guangdong Modern Dance Company (GMDC) is China's first professional modern dance company. The company performs abroad frequently and has appeared at major arts festivals in France, Germany, Switzerland, USA, Singapore, Philippines, Beijing, and Hong Kong etc. Their performances are always met with critical acclaim and overwhelmingly positive audience response.

In 2004, the company takes up the unprecedented challenge of undergoing a structural reform as initiated by the Chinese Central Government. They will start operating as an independent company, with their own board of directors which no longer relies on a full government subvention. The restructured GMDC is composed of four major faculties: the dance company, the training centre, the modern dance festival and the publicity and promotion centre. Willy Tsao, the founding artistic director (1992-1998) of the company was invited to be the General Manager. Pun Siu-fai is the current Artistic Director of GMDC.
