Helen Lai, a gifted choreographer born in a family with two celebrated composers, is inspired by Testimony, the controversial memoirs of Dmitri Shostakovich. The second DVD in the “30 Years in Retrospect Series” is co-choreographed by Willy Tsao and Xing Liang based on the tragic story of famous Chinese hero Xiang Yu. The dancers played the chessman on a huge chessboard on the stage and eventually questioned the making of heroes - whether they were born with heroic qualities or were they the products of destiny. The Conqueror is an exemplar of Chinese modern dance drama and it paved the way for the award-winning Warrior Lanling in 2007.
