City Contemporary Dance Company Presents 2026-27 Dance Season: “Sensory Matrix”

Connecting the senses and the present through layered bodies, time and space

(HONG KONG – March 30, 2026) City Contemporary Dance Company (CCDC) proudly unveils its 2026–27 dance season, “Sensory Matrix”, inviting audiences to explore life, emotion and sensation from multiple angles. Led by Artistic Director Sang Jijia, the season features four distinctive works that open up a layered space where sensation and empathy meet, gently stretching our ways of seeing. With new series and new rhythms, four major stage productions and a slate of overseas tours, CCDC draws on everyday experience and, through the dancers’ finely tuned bodies, weaves together diverse cultures and cross-media forms into a vivid, richly textured programme.

A Visionary Message from Artistic Director Sang Jijia
“With each turning season, the stage transforms anew,” says Sang Jijia. “With ‘Sensory Matrix’, I am interested in how shifts of body, time and space can sharpen what we sense and reveal what usually stays unseen.” He emphasises that CCDC will continue to connect across Asia and revisit classic works, and hopes that every audience member can feel the force of the present moment in the play of light, shadow and movement on stage.

Four Major Productions: Resonance Across Generations

Season Opener: Two Matters (May, 2026)

A double bill featuring Chen Wu-kang’s Restory, which starts from the idea of “rest” and weaves Cantopop with touch and physical support to awaken Hong Kong’s collective memories; and Bruce Wong’s Nowhere to Land, which captures a lucid struggle inside extreme emotions, holding one’s self at the edge between order and imbalance.

‘Laap3 Laap3 Ling3’ Series: Like Summer Flowers (July – August, 2026)
This new series focuses on emerging choreographers and is choreographed and performed by CCDC dancers. True to its name, the work showcases the vibrant creativity of the next generation, sketching the lives and perspectives of today’s young people with the immediacy of summer in full bloom.

‘The Connected Stage’ Series: Kylián and Sangba (October, 2026)

A master production pairing the classic Sleepless by Jiří Kylián (former Artistic Director of Nederlands Dans Theater, NDT) with a new creation by Sang Jijia. Sleepless traces the loneliness and drifting consciousness of the sleepless through abstract movement, while Sang Jijia’s new work gently layers bodies and years, extending the flow of feelings and relationships between people.

Season Finale: Dance Matrix (January, 2027)

A large-scale kinetic collage that weaves together classic moments from CCDC’s repertoire with new creations. As dancers move through familiar yet recomposed rhythms, the work becomes both a tribute to the company’s legacy and a sensory feast of touch, sound and image.

Deepening Cultural Exchange and Talent Development
City Contemporary Dance Festival (CCDF) & HOTPOT (October, 2026)

Staged at the East Kowloon Cultural Centre, this edition of the festival once again features the “HOTPOT East Asia Dance Platform”, a meeting point for artists from Hong Kong, Seoul and Yokohama to spark new cross-regional collaborations.

‘Jumping Frames — Hong Kong International Movement-image Festival’ on Tour (2026)

Jumping Frames sets off on an international tour to leading experimental and dance film platforms, showcasing Hong Kong’s most distinctive dance films in cities around the world and steadily widening the global presence and impact of Hong Kong dance.

China National Arts Fund: Contemporary Dance Talent Development
This six-week intensive focuses on six key areas – choreography, dramaturgy, stage aesthetics, music, physical practice, as well as production and communications – with the aim of nurturing contemporary dance makers with wide-ranging, multi-layered perspectives.

CCDC Education and Outreach Programmes
Drawing on over three decades of experience, CCDC continues to cultivate new generations of artists through a rich mix of courses that weave together Kung Fu, drama and improvisation, treating every encounter with dance as a seed that takes root and grows through practice.
